The Politics Of Palin

The Politics Of Palin

September 05, 2008
Gov. Sarah Palin stepped into the spotlight and reignited an age-old debate: can working women can have it all? Harry Smith poses that question to a roundtable of three women.

Special GOP Convention Issue: The Happiest Convention
by (more by this author)

Posted 09/05/2008 ETUpdated 09/05/2008 ET

This was the happiest convention I have attended.
In seven conventions going back to 1984, I have never seen delegates as happy.
I have seen them eager, energized, committed, determined but the underlying mood last night was sheer joy.

There was joy that Senator McCain had had the courage to pick Governor Palin.
There was joy that she and her family had come through the week of attacks smiling and eager to campaign.

There was joy that Governor Palin's Wednesday night speech completely vindicated Senator McCain's choice.

There was joy that 37 million Americans had seen her speech. That is almost as many as watched Senator Obama's acceptance speech (39 million).

There was deep inspiration from Cindy McCains story of adopting a child from Bangladesh and her commitment to the poor and the weak around the world.

There was awe at the film about Senator McCain's service to country and inspiration from the personal parts of his speech.

There was joy at Roberta McCain saying "he's a momma's boy" and admiration for her energy and enthusiasm at 96 (sort of knocks down the age issue).
Finally there was joy that we had nominated two real people of great authenticity to take on the poseurs on the other ticket.

It was appropriate in St. Paul, the city of F. Scott Fitzgerald, that the modern Great Gatsby found himself facing a ticket with a real war hero and a real governor.
Obama's long voyage of self discovery and posturing may be about to collide with a team that can't be intimidated and is not afraid to tell the truth.
Now that is a cause for joy.

The Coming War Against Sarah Palin
I am writing this newsletter from St. Paul, MN, where Alaska Governor Sarah Palin electrified the crowd at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night. And I think it's safe to say she showed the entire country a fresh new face of conservative reform.

There was a lot of build-up to Governor Palin's speech, both in the media and among the professional Republican political class. Everyone was telling us that the speech was the Governor's big moment; if she could perform well Wednesday night, she would break free of the despicable, sustained partisan and personal attacks being leveled at her by everyone from the left-wing blogs to the elite media.

Palin Survived. Now the Left REALLY Has to Destroy Her
But the pundits and the consultants were wrong. Palin's success last week doesn't mean the left-wing is going to give up attacking her.

Palin's success means that now the left really has to destroy her.
Why? Because she's proved that she is an intelligent, articulate and mortal threat to the left's claim that it is the sole, legitimate voice of women and blue-collar, working Americans.
Sarah Palin is a mother of five who is also an accomplished woman.
She is a lifelong member of the NRA who is also an intelligent, articulate professional.
She is pro-life in her words and in her deeds, and she controls an $11 billion budget and 15,000 Alaska state employees.

Simply put, the left has a greater vested interest in destroying her than any presidential or vice presidential candidate the Republican Party has nominated in the last fifty years.
The media will try to downplay her accomplishments as when Ron Allen of MSNBC tried to get me to accept that she had too little experience. Watch it here.

Echoes of the Clarence Thomas Nomination
We've seen this kind of desperation before, of course.
Those of us who lived through the effort by the elites to destroy Clarence Thomas when he was nominated to sit on the Supreme Court by George H. W. Bush have an unsettling idea of the fight that lies ahead.

The left and the elites regarded Thomas - an African-American who is also a conservative - as a threat to their ability to be the arbiters of what African-Americans and other minorities should believe.

Allowing Thomas to ascend to the high court would show that skin color does not dictate political affiliation - just as allowing Sarah Palin to become vice president would show that being a woman and a blue-collar American does not dictate political party. So they threw mud at Thomas. They called him a traitor to his race.

Just like what's happening now with Governor Palin. We've seen this before.
If Palin's Still Standing in November, Republicans Will Win the Election

The road ahead promises to be bumpy. But the good news is that if Governor Palin survives the next few months as a national figure of competence and reform, then the left suddenly has a tremendous problem.
It's a problem that is bigger than just losing the election (which is what will happen if she is a star in November).

The left's problem will be that, at 44, Sarah Palin represents potentially 30 years of Republican Party leadership and transforming the party and America.

The stakes are high, and the race is on.

It's time to brace ourselves for the coming war against Sarah Palin - and its time to win it.

Your friend,

Newt Gingrich

FDR: The First Truth and the Second Truth of Democracy

The first truth is that the liberty of democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is Fascism -- ownership of Government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power. The second truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if its business system does not provide employment and produce and distribute goods in such a way to sustain an acceptable standard of living.

~ Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 - April 12, 1945) , the 32nd President of the United States of America, on April 29, 1938, in a message to Congress titled "Recommendations to the Congress to Curb Monopolies and the Concentration of Economic Power."

Inhuman Torture in China: the Tip of the Iceberg

Inhuman Torture in China: the Tip of the Iceberg

Full report PDF version.

With the Chinese regime's roundup of Falun Gong practitioners in anticipation of the Beijing Olympics, the massacre in Lhasa, Tibet, and the clampdown on the media, the spotlight has been shining ever brighter on China's horrendous human rights abuses.

The FLGHRWG wishes to announce that it has sent out millions of emails around the world to alert government officials, NGOs, human rights groups, and many individuals of the inhuman torture going on in China. In order to win the Olympics, China made a promise to improve human rights. Far from keeping its promise, the human rights violations have gotten worse - much worse.

The following torture cases of Falun Gong practitioners represent just the tip of the iceberg. They are typical of what tens of thousands have experienced, what hundreds of thousands face, and what millions fear if they dare to place their own belief above belief in the Chinese Communist Party.

Ms. Zhang Yulan: In 2000, at the Changchun Women's Labor Camp Ms. Zhang was forced to do slave labor, often until midnight, and was beaten and shocked with electric batons. In 2003, just two years after the Communist regime promised to "improve human rights" in order to get the Olympics, Ms. Zhang's father and brother were tortured to death for practicing Falun Gong. On November 28, 2007, the police arrested Ms. Zhang, and caused her to "disappear." The authorities refuse to give her family any idea of her whereabouts, or even tell them whether she is still alive.

Ms. Zhao Zhongling: Ms. Zhao was arrested five times for practicing Falun Gong, and suffered injuries due to torture each time. One month after her arrest on March 23, 2007, the authorities reported she was in critical condition. However they refused to release her. They continued to use heavy shackles on her legs, kept her tied to bed and even sentenced her to three years of forced labor. Ms. Zhao was tortured to death less than a month and a half after her arrest. She was only 44. After her death, the local authorities forced her family to sign a statement acknowledging her guilt.

Mr. Liu Hongwei and Ms. Mu Ping: On May 13, 2003, Mr. Liu's wife was tortured to death at Jilin Province Hezuizi Women's Prison for practicing Falun Gong. To avoid capture and further persecution, Mr. Liu had to leave his daughter and wander about. Ms. Mu Ping's husband was tortured to death on May 13, 2002. For practicing Falun Gong, she herself had been tortured at a labor camp for close to three years. After she was released, her son never left her side.

The two adults came together, formed a new family, found work and settled down. On October 24, 2006, the police arrested them again, ransacked their home, and froze the 70,000 Yuan in their bank account. Their children were left without care, one of their parents suffered a heart attack. Both of their elderly mothers are on the brink of mental collapse, and Mr. Liu and Ms. Mu are still in prison for their belief.

Ms. Wei Fengju: Ms. Wei was first arrested in 1999. She was jailed for speaking the truth about Falun Gong. She was forced to work 17 to 20 hours per day and was sometimes not allowed to sleep at all. The guards used electric batons to shock her on her chest and in her mouth, which disfigured her mouth. When she was detained in February 2007, the torture left her with abdominal pain and she could not eat. After her release, she could not recover and died on July 12, 2007. Before her death, she told others, "I won't be able to recover because they injected some unknown drug into me."

Mr. Li Hongfu: Mr. Li was repeatedly jailed and tortured for telling people the truth about Falun Gong. The torture included the tiger bench, electric shocks, nailing bamboo shoots under his fingernails and merciless daily beatings by convicted drug addicts. The brutality caused Mr. Li's spleen to rupture and his chest to collapse. He vomited and had difficulty breathing. He weighed less than 40 kg, could no longer walk unaided, and was in constant excruciating pain. Mr. Li never recovered and died on December 8, 2006, at the age of 31.

Dr. James Zogby and Mr. John Zogby Discuss the Impact of the 2008 Elections on the Arab-American Relationship

Dr. James Zogby and Mr. John Zogby Discuss the Impact of the 2008 Elections on the Arab-American Relationship

Noted pollster John Zogby, President of Zogby International and Middle East Expert Dr. James Zogby, President of the Arab American Institute (AAI) USA, offer remarks at the second annual YAL Global Action Forum.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, March 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --

Today, John and James Zogby offered remarks before the Young Arab Leader's Global Action Forum in New York City on the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election and the role of Middle East issues in this election. The Young Arab Leaders (YAL) is the region's foremost development platform for business, public sector and civil society leaders in the Middle East.

Highly-respected American pollster, John Zogby, offered the crowd a broad overview of the political landscape. Based on his polling, he identified trends in the American electorate. Of these broader trends, he cited the fact that two-thirds of the American people feel that the country is in crisis and pointed out that many Americans have returned to the political center, away from extreme liberalism or conservatism. Calling this the anti-institutional election, he cited Hurricane Katrina as a hidden, yet lingering cause of voter disillusionment and dissatisfaction with the status quo. Although dissatisfied with current leadership, he discounted an easy victory for Democrats, indicating that the election would be hard fought and that all of the remaining candidates, on both sides, have been damaged.

Dr. James Zogby discussed the role that Middle East issues have played in the current U.S. election. He indicated that, to his disappointment, the Middle East has not been part of the political debate during this campaign cycle. The American people, like people everywhere, are concerned more with their own lives, so issues such as the economy and health care dominate. He felt that the Republican candidates, with few exceptions, have adopted the same foreign policy as President Bush. Dr. Zogby believes that the Democratic candidates have talked around foreign policy issues as opposed to addressing them in a substantive way. Dr. Zogby ended his discussion saying that American needs a new Middle East policy and that this election has the potential to bring such change.

YAL Forum participants then had the opportunity to ask the two experts questions.

YAL is an independent pan-Arab organization that aims to create a new generation of young leaders capable of actively participating in the region's development process and driving it into a new phase of growth. It is a network of the region's leaders from the business community, politics, academia, media, arts, culture and civil society, who are committed to improving the state of the Arab world.

About Young Arab Leaders:T

he Young Arab Leaders is a network of Arab men and women who have seen the power of action in their own lives, reached unprecedented levels of success for their age, are positive and can see beyond today's difficulties to that vision of a prosperous Arab future. These leaders are currently in prominent positions of responsibility and are destined for extraordinary achievement, and they believe that their efforts today can have an impact on their communities, countries and the region as a whole. The Political Hypocrisy of Barack Hussein Obama’s Demagogy in His Desperation to Win South Carolina Democratic Primary

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton

The Political Hypocrisy of Barack Hussein Obama’s Demagogy in His Desperation to Win South Carolina Democratic Primary

I have been seeing and reading reports of the misguided insinuations of the Barack Obama camp on the remarks of the Clintons on Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr and the history of the Civil Rights Movement. I am not surprised, because I know the hypocritical political tactics of Senator Barack Hussein Obama and how he is going to manipulate racial sentiments among the African Americans in South Carolina and other states to turn them away from voting for Senator Hillary Clinton.

The American news media and the Barack Obama camp are raising dust over nothing. They have become hysterical since contrary to their expectations, Hillary Clinton defeated them in New Hampshire, and they are scared of losing again in South Carolina. They are now either misquoting the Clintons or quoting them out of context to turn the African American voters against them.

Senator Barack Hussein Obama

Senator Barack Obama and his anti-Clinton surrogates should discuss the important and significant issues bothering Americans, the looming economic recession, and the early withdrawal of American Troops from Iraq, the housing crisis, health care and the problems of illegal immigrants. They should stop all their petty sentimental outbursts and hypocritical demagogy on race.

The political pettiness of the American news media is an embarrassment to those who believe in the ethics of modern journalism. They have been fixing the presidential polls to cause controversial debates to generate sensational news headlines to sell their newspapers offline and attract more readers to their news websites.
Grow up boys.
A good shepherd should know how to separate the sheep from the goats.

This is malicious. This is nothing short of political blackmail to discourage African American voters from voting for Hillary Clinton in South Carolina.
Why is Barack Obama desperate?

I hope he will not have a heart attack before the end of his make or break presidential campaign and his desperation to become the first black president of America.

He is afraid of being disgraced after all the hullabaloo of the Oprah Winfrey Road Show for him in South Carolina. He was shocked by his defeat in New Hampshire.
He concentrated all his energies on winning Iowa and when he saw the polls giving him a double-digit lead before the New Hampshire primary, he was already over hyped that he would beat Hillary Clinton. He was over confident and boastful, but God intervened and gave Hillary Clinton victory. New Hampshire has a remarkable history of supporting political Amazons and the people are more intellectually enlightened than the Iowans.

His Kenyan grandmother recently called Barack Hussein Obama, “a good Muslim” in a CNN interview with her at the Obama homestead in Kenya. So, he became a Christian in America, because of his presidential ambition? Americans will never vote for a Muslim presidential candidate in America.

After name-dropping Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, they are now name dropping Pa Nelson Mandela to campaign against Hillary Clinton, by their deliberate distortions of Bill Clinton’s remarks and statements. They want the African Americans to think that the Clintons are disrespecting Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and Pa Nelson Mandela.

They are trying all the tricks of their political tactics to swing African American voters away from Hillary Clinton by political misinformation.

He won Iowa and he turned his victory speech into a parody of the Civil Rights Movement, as if he is now the symbol of the African American struggle to elect the first black president of America, with rephrased clichés.

Hello Mr. Barack Hussein Obama, Shirley St. Hill Chisholm, was 100% bona fide Africaan American woman who was a presidential candidate in 1972. Then in 1984, Rev. Jesse Jackson became the second African American to mount a nationwide campaign for President of the United States, running as a Democrat. He won five primaries and caucuses. He also contested in 1988. So, Mr. Barack Hussein Obama you are nothing new in America.

Senator Barack Obama is not the first non-white presidential candidate in America and he won’t be the last.

Barack Hussein Obama is the one politicizing race and not the Clintons. He wants to turn the Democratic primary in South Carolina into a black versus white presidential election power struggle.

"Our lives are a mixture of different roles. Most of us are doing the best we can to find whatever the right balance is . . . For me, that balance is family, work, and service."

~ Hillary Rodham Clinton, 1992.
